Bittermelons and Mimosas:
A Philippine Memoir

Signed by author Nieves Villamin (Eden Canyon Vineyards Mom)

Nieves Villamin's book is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in Philippine history, customs, and superstitions. As a child in the Philippines, Nieves' life was a challenge - backbreaking fieldwork, a father who often wasn't there, and dirt-poor living conditions. Yet, this little girl found things to be thankful for such as the singing of the workers while they toiled under blistering sun. Her childlike sense of hope will inspire young readers and make them grateful for living conditions in America.

Full of historical data, the memoir also describes in detail a sort of magical thinking that ruled the Philippine people; plus, it celebrates foods, traditions, and rituals that will interest all.

How she and her young husband escaped to America and found "a land of opportunity" will amuse, impress, and inspire all-age readers. I enjoyed reading this memoir; in fact, I read it three times. You are sure to enjoy it, too.

Cat 5 Melor - Nasa pic"Tis sweet to drink
what was hard to endure."

-Elaine Villamin

Every year, harvest is a dance with Mother Nature. She leads, we follow, and sometimes we don't know where...

The Storm

On October 14, 2009, Category 5 Super Typhoon "Melor" hit California's coast. The remnants of Melor poured 10 inches of rain, all while I was driving with tons of grapes via California's mountains, valleys, and bridges. Melor gusted 70 mph winds that downed power lines, trees, and big rigs. It rattled and hydroplaned my diesel truck so I called David (our then new assistant) to make the drive with me back to the winery. Winemaking is trial by fire, and this would be David's baptism by storm.

David's perspective

"Our zinfandel blend started its journey into becoming a wine, braving the Cat5 Melor typhoon that hit California in the middle of Harvest 2009. Shaking in its stems and crushed at 3AM, the grapes fermented into wine, finishing their transformation from chaos to harmony. Another storm brewed during bottling — Tuca, a visiting dog, scared a lamb to death, leaving everything else a little stirred. Surveying the aftermath, it was clear this wine had a knack for shaking things up. Naming our zinfandel blend after its stormy past, "Cat 5 Melor" is now blowing out of the cellar where if you’re lucky, you can get caught up in the storm."

Elaine Villamin and David Teixeira

Opera Singer"The opera ain't over

— Texan Writer Dan Cook

Our 2008 "Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon continues her solo debut. Released a few weeks, there are less than 200 cases left. She'll continue to swirl a sweet melody in Emeryville for impromptu food and wine pairings. Maestro Chef Francisco Machado and his 9-piece ensemble are composing a 9-course Asian cuisine degustation menu and wine pairing. And there will be more pairings to sing about at our upcoming "Bottle Brigade Research Meeting" for Wine Club members.

We're making our winemaker's debut this month in Texas. Elaine will "drive friendly" in the Lone Star State for exciting events from in Houston, Austin, and Fort Worth. We hear "every thing's bigger in Texas." So please, stop by and give a big Texas hello.

Message In a Bottle from 3/3/11

2008 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon“Wine makes a symphony of a good meal.”
—Fernande Garvin

You know a wine is ready to bottle when it "sings" in harmony with different flavors and textures. An amazing wine can be described as a full symphony. While audiences still sing praises for our current releases (including a recent medal), our next vintage is crooning with a little bit of soulful jazz. The 2008 "Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon is our lowest production "Estate" wine. Frost devastated our vineyard on Friday the 13th, in April 2008, and half of all our vineyard's grapes perished. One of the challenges of winemaking is that no one knows what song Mother Nature has planned for the year.

However, smaller yields = more potent fruit. Every precious drop of our 2008 "Estate" Cab is dynamic and complex, showcasing the maturity of our vines in all of her 350 cases. Join us for our 2008 "Estate" Cab debut on Saturday, 3/19/11 at the The Paulding and Company Kitchen. We'll celebrate with spring fondue and taste new releases plus old favorites. The symphony crescendos on 6/13/11, when we will have our annual party with Cal Performances and the Maria Schneider Orchestra as part of Ojai North!

to tasting every note,

David Teixeira and Elaine Villamin

Chaarm DetailThe Most Charming Bottle Ever

Style. Structure. Color. Charm. The "Charming 2007 Jolie" package has it all. Globetrotter Sharon Finn raids jewelry and antique districts all around the world to create her dazzling chandeliers and chic jewelry. Sharon handcrafted 20 limited edition bracelets commemorating the charms of our 2007 vintage that can be worn on a wrist, or left on the bottle to remember that special toast. No two bracelets are alike. Using a mixture of Swarovski and Czech crystals with brass or silver charms, Sharon scaled down her stage and runway work to adorn our bottles with light and whimsy.

Our "Jolie" is always great company for any dinner. With flavors of chocolate, currants, blueberries, and spices, "Jolie" pairs well with most dishes, including meat courses, curries, and even yule log desserts. More about our 2007 Jolie

2010 Vintage — “A Touch of Thunder and Lightning”

2010 HarvestAs thunderstorms crescendoed two hours east of us during the end of our first cab harvest day, I thought about how no matter how much you prepare, sometimes it rains. Then, it started sprinkling. From the vineyard, you could see dark billowing clouds carrying thunder and lightning, moving in our direction. They were pummeling the Central Valley vineyards.

The next morning, the rains hadn't arrived yet so harvest could continue. When two tractors went down, our little ATV stepped up, hauling a half-ton of grapes throughout the day. Dad "MacGyver-ed" all the troubled machinery, and all our grapes were safely picked three hours before the first hailstorm. You've got to experience the tougher years to fully appreciate the better ones. Mother Nature showed us her grace this year with a beautiful vintage. There's much to be thankful for, and we look forward to celebrating the holidays with you.

Cheers,

Elaine Villamin

Featured wine flight, every weekend:Freedom from the Press

Lucy and Ethel comically stomped the juice out of the grapes, but how did the wine taste? Come compare our cabernet sauvignon "free-run" (wine that doesn't go through a press nor toes) against "pressed wine". Without feet, the difference is remarkable. Stomp on in for a free tasting.

New Releases!

2007 FFTP2007 “Freedom from the Press” 100% Free-Run Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemakers disagree on whether or not there's a difference between "free-run" wine and pressed wine. For this vintage, there was no argument. Worthy of being bottled on its own, our 2007 "FFTP" has the soft structure of a pinot noir with the complex flavors of cabernet sauvignon. (Label artwork, "Forget-Me-Nots" by Bill Cone)

This harvest season, Dad brought home some colorful roosters with a nasty habit of crowing during afternoon naps. I thought we'd be making coq au vin with them, but Dad likes how pretty they are. They now roam the vineyard, adding fertilizer. Our pretty "Coq au Vin" holiday package is inspired by the beauty of our roosters and our 2007 "Jolie" Bordeaux Style Red Wine.

“The Sapphire Phoenix"

2007 Reserve LabelWine labels are a tricky thing. There's tradition and required federal information to blend into something worthy of a wedding banquet. Our graphic designer and I have a running joke- "Make it more like Star Wars". Perhaps the wine pixies heard my wish because Terryl Whitlatch, Concept Artist for "Star Wars" came to our summer tasting room hours. She was inspired by the story of our vineyard's blazing start and created a label for us that will also be used for her upcoming book Animals Real and Imagined: the fantasy of what is and what might be. Terryl is not only a genius, but she's one of the most generous and humble people I have ever met. Terryl's "Sapphire Phoenix" will be our emblem for our 2007 "Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon.

to Terryl, and all the art she creates and imagines,

Summer School for David Teixeira, Asst. Winemaker

It’s been quite a summer. We started off at Ghirardelli Square “Uncorked”, hung out with Clint Eastwood at “The Clint” golf tournament Memorial Day Weekend, gave a wine talk during a CRN radio show and wine dinner at Ruth Chris’s Steakhouse, strolled through The San Mateo Wine Walk, hit the Southern California beaches for the Stars of Paso Robles BBQ, but somehow we always end up back at Roy’s for a few drinks.

With lots of events left, we’re going back to the vineyard for harvest. Vineyard tours end 9/6/10 (but Wine Club members are always welcome- please contact us first to make sure we're not on the road). See you amongst the grapes or say “hello” on Facebook.

Cheers,
-David

“It’s a winemaker’s life in a bottle." — Mark Selleck, The Wine Cellar, NJ

Country RoadOur wines are like time capsules. Open a bottle, and its scent instantly tells you something. Does the wine smell like fresh blueberries? We probably had temperate weather during growing season. Challenging years can produce complex wines. For the 2006 vintage, 106 degree heat at harvest produced a fruit-forward "Estate" cab. Its finish was recently described by Master Sommelier Alan Murray as "graphite".

Drinking wine is easy. Using all your senses will help to experience all a wine bottle has to offer. Did you know that 80% of what you taste in wine is based on smell? Learn more at our "Sense Lab" series, starting on May 26. Designed to be both informative and fun, we'll test your sense of smell with spices, learn how to make a spice rub for Memorial Day Barbecue, eat dinner, and enjoy a wine flight. This inaugural session is specially priced so book early to avoid disappointment! More info

Stop and smell the wine,

Message In a Bottle from 3/10

“The Magnificent Stranger"

A new vintage, a new chapter, and a new story... In case you didn’t hear it through the grapevine (via our Facebook and Twitter), Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon shot an upcoming Spielberg movie in our building right after we bottled our new releases: our 2007 “Estate” Cabernet Sauvignon and NV “Suerte”. Do we feel lucky? Yes, we feel like lucky punks and we're sharing the luck with you.

2007 "Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon

Chabot in the snowThe 2007 “Estate” Cabernet Sauvignon is an auspicious vintage. With the thickest and most flavorful grape skins we’d ever grown, we spent most of the fermenting days punching down around the clock and swearing. All of our efforts created a legendary wine- potent and complex with solid tannins, she will gracefully age for 7-10 years. Open a bottle and taste, then wait an hour, an evening, a day, or a even week… her raven complexion reveals a feminine style, medium body, and dense flavors of fresh blueberries, chocolate, currant, cinnamon, violets, and cloves.

On the 2007 “Estate” bottling day, thunder, hailstorms, howling winds, and blackouts interrupted the line, yet she made her way safely without bottle shock. We planned an immediate release date but I started worrying. If released too soon, drinkers may miss all of her beauty- she’s young and needs time to breathe. Then one afternoon, Clint Eastwood walked into our warehouse. I could swear I glimpsed a .44 magnum under his poncho and a Stetson hat on his head. I was in trouble- Mr. Eastwood was shooting a film in our building and I was drinking too loud. He recognized our label, picked-up a bottle of our “Suerte” and said “Buena Suerte!”, (great name for the next vintage), tasted our wines, and I asked him the inevitable question of whether or not our 2007 “Estate” was ready for release. Before I could finish babbling, he declared in his legendary director’s voice: “Release it.”

To a magnificent stranger,

- Elaine

Finding the Meaning of the Holidays

Charlie Brown Christmas TreeDo you remember the Charlie Brown Christmas special where Charlie is depressed because no one knows the true meaning of Christmas? Substitute “Christmas” with our holiday meteor shower party and perhaps you’ll understand why I felt like Lucy pulled the football away as I was trying to kick it. We were fogged out by only a few hours. Timing is everything. (Speaking of which, it’s not too late to have a special bottle shipped for arrival on 12/24).

For me, the true meaning of the holidays and our meteor shower party is to celebrate and say thank you to everyone who helped make 2009 a “beautiful collision” year. We feel truly lucky to squash grapes for you every year. Happy holidays to you and your loved ones!

To drinking well in 2009 and another shot at catching meteors in 2010,

- Elaine

Are there any more events in December?

Yes, we have our Gift Wrapping Exchange Event on Sunday, December 20 4:00-7:00PM in Emmeryville.

Are Chabot Space & Science Center events part of my Eden Canyon Vineyards Wine Club membership?

The Eden Canyon Vineyards' annual party is scheduled to be at Chabot in August during the Perseids meteor shower. Chabot is also offering a special membership package to our members- $199 includes your yearly Eden Canyon Vineyards 6-pack Wine Club membership (6 bottles of our 2006 or 2007 "Estate" cab) and a Chabot "Earth Adult" membership. Signing up by 12/31/09 saves you over $50, and benefits include unlimited Chabot visits for a year, exclusive parties and premieres, special pricing, and more. Anyone who renews their Wine Club membership or becomes a Chabot member by 12/31/09 will immediately receive 2 additional "Passport to the Universe" tickets. (They make excellent holiday gifts...) And if would like a higher level of Chabot membership, Eden Canyon Vineyards wine club members will receive a $20 discount towards any membership level. Please call us to sign-up or renew your wine club membership.

Who was the appetizer caterer at the Geminids meteor shower?

Cynthia Bloebaum was the generous chef and instructor who brought the “Green Goddess Dip”
Cynthia Bloebaum |510-444-0828 | email | www.chefcynthia.net

When will my yearly wine club shipment be released?

The 2007 “Estate” cab is scheduled to be released and shipped to our Wine Club members during the week of January 25, 2010. There will be no price increase. More information about its release after the holidays. Can’t wait to share the 2007 cab with you!

What bottle would you give for the holidays?

Snowflake and Jolie is our special holiday gift. Jolie is an easy food pairer and it’s hard to go wrong with snowflakes. We have less than 30 cases of our "Presente" for sale so that’s definitely a last call gift item. Can’t go wrong with any of our “Estate cabs. Or give them and yourself a gift by purchasing a Wine Club Membership. For each gift membership, we will send you a thank you gift such as a snowflake bottle stopper, wine notes book, or a Chabot "Passport to the Universe ticket". The ultimate gift (that I’d want someone to give me)- a Wine Club membership plus Chabot membership for $199.

Order a special bottle online or call 805.238.1241.

Timing is Everything When Harvesting Grapes or Meteors

Chabot in the snowImagine planning a grape harvest (or in our case, last Sunday’s meteor shower) for months and getting rained out. The 2009 harvest season ended with tropical storms making their way to California. Timing was on our side- we harvested before the rains came. Mother Nature was very kind to us.

The 2009 Geminids were similar. We were all excited when our event got the green light. The weather conditions seemed ripe- dark skies with little moonlight interference, and the Geminids would peak early at 9:00PM with 100-120 meteors dazzling us with its multi-colored ionization trails. Our website traffic went up 1500% and this event was the largest attended event we’ve ever had.

Mother Nature had other plans- rain and fog. We all drank, ate, had great company, but us skywatchers didn’t get to harvest the meteors before the rain. It was a bummer, but you have to respect Mother Nature's will. Thank you to the 100+ who made the trek, hoping that the weather would clear in time. (Photo right: Snow at Chabot, days before the event.)

When I came back home to the vineyard, I looked to the part of the sky that Chabot Astronomer Conrad Jung taught us to look at for the Geminids. I saw a few meteors whiz by. Mother Nature has always been good to the vineyard. But I would have much rather watched the meteors with the Chabot crowd. I guess just like grape harvests, there are meteor showers every year.

For all the people who made the trek to Chabot for the Geminids, we’ve got your email addresses. Next year, we’re going to plan for the Perseids in August, either at Chabot or the vineyard, depending on the weather. When you get the invite, be sure to RSVP and you’ll get free admission to the next meteor watching attempt. You earned it!

Cute meets, meteors, and 50,000 Filipinos

I have probably talked to just about every person on this mailing list. Maybe you called and placed an order, waiting patiently as I turned the radio down. Or maybe you're one of the couples that met at our events, and eventually got married. If we met at our Ondoy fundraising events, many thanks to you for helping us and Red Carpet Wines, Juri McCorkle, and Red Lantern Restaurant raise funds to provide over 50,000 flood victims with medicines. Our mailing list has a very generous spirit.

Let's collide again at the Geminids meteor shower this Sunday- our holiday party takes place underneath the stars at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland. It's hard to beat skywatching underneath a meteor shower, with wine, blankets, and great company. "What a beautiful collision, things that go bump in the night, with such beautiful precision, fate could create you and I" - Bic Runga

to you, our friends, supporters, and drinking pals,

- Elaine

Wine Club Shipment

2005 Reserve label2009 Shipment Offer

3 bottles of 2005 "Estate" and 3 bottles 2005 "Reserve": $163.20

We've been getting a lot of inquiries about the yearly December shipment. We're planning on releasing the 2007 "Estate" cab in February. Dad said we should do something since many members give our wines as holiday gifts. "Give 'em 6 bottles of the 2005 "Reserve" at the Estate wine club price." I don't want to- it's hard to part with our Reserve- it's our first wine in 100% new French oak barrels, and all the winemaking decisions were mine. So, we compromised- 3 bottles of our 2005 "Estate" and 3 bottles of our 2005 "Reserve" for the same price as your regular wine club shipment - $27.20 per bottle/$163.20 per 6-pack (a savings of over $30). It honestly pains me to do this but Dad reminded me that it's for you, our wine club members, our friends and biggest supporters, so show some holiday spirit. OK dad, you're right. Please email or call if you'd like to order the 6-pack shipment. After 12/31, the 2005 vintage wine goes back into library pricing and we make way for the 2007s.
