"The Life and Times of a Grape"

Chapter 1: Small berries are better

Thursday, October 23, 2008

6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

at Periscope Cellars
1410 62nd Street Suite B (@ Hollis)
Emeryville, CA 94608
www.periscopecellars.com

Tasting and dinner fee: $15.

"The Life and Times of a Grape" series is complimentary for Eden Canyon Vineyards Wine Club members
To RSVP and purchase tickets: events@edencanyon.com or 805.238.1241

Every year, Dad spends thousands of hours in the heat, rain, and (this year), frost, tending his grapes for beauty and taste. And when they’re at their ultimate peak, we pick them and crush them to a pulp.

This harvest season, the vineyard manager will have his say. Dad's bringing our grapes for us to see (and then we can squash them to a pulp). We’ll have a buffet dinner, drink, and even run some tests to see if they’re ready to pick. And if you’re a true cork dork, stay longer and we’ll discuss why this year’s motto is: “small berries are better.”

"The Life and Times of a Grape"

Chapter 2: Blend me a Bordeaux!

Thursday, November 20, 2008

at Periscope Cellars
1410 62nd Street Suite B (@ Hollis)
Emeryville, CA 94608

Tasting and dinner fee: $25.

"The Life and Times of a Grape" series is complimentary for Eden Canyon Vineyards Wine Club members
To RSVP and purchase tickets: events@edencanyon.com or 805.238.1241

It's almost bottling time! I'm working on our next Bordeaux blend. Care to watch, learn, and try your hand at making a Bordeaux blend or your own style of wine? We'll have barrel samples to blend into... something, plus a buffet dinner. Feel free to bring your own wine samples to play with too. - Elaine

Hunting Party with Dad (Danny Villamin)

Save the date!  11/22 - 11/23

Behind our vineyard lies the Los Padres National Forest. Deer, boar, pheasants, quail, turkeys, and even peacocks have made an appearance amongst the vines. We enjoy their company, except when they attack our sheep or eat the grapes.

Dad and a hunting guide will have a word with the wild animals in November. This local hunting trip is limited to ten Eden Canyon Vineyards Wine Club members who have current hunting licenses. We'll eat and pair our wines with whatever you bring home. Email events@edencanyon.com for more details.

In the News...

Our vineyard (and us) was on national tv!

In Wine Country, came by last year right before we bottled our 2005 vintage. This James Beard award-winning program airs nationally on NBC and you can view our story online.

Miracle Fruit and Wine Tasting

Saturday, August 23, 2008

4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Miracle fruit is more than a grape?

In June, I went to a reading of "The Fruit Hunters" and tasted miracle fruit. It's hard to describe and something you have to experience- flavors change making sour things taste sweet, lemons like lemonade, and according to a NY Times article, Tabasco sauce tastes like doughnut glaze. It was intriguing so we're going to reproduce the NY Times tasting and pour barrel samples of our future releases.

A Nipa Hut in the Vineyard: Wines by Filipino-Americans

You are invited to attend a unique wine-tasting experience:
A Nipa Hut in the Vineyard: Wines by Filipino-Americans

There's a story in every bottle of wine -
The Filipino-American story takes us from the days when Filipinos were a migrant labor force harvesting grapes in California's wine growing regions, to the present day, where Filipino-Americans fully participate in the wine tradition as owners and managers of their own vineyards and wineries.

Don't miss this chance to hear a story, see a unique perspective on a California tradition, learn about wines, and have fun!

WHAT
“A Nipa Hut in the Vineyard: Wines by Filipino-Americans” -- a wine-tasting event showcasing premiere wineries and vineyards from owned and managed by Filipino-Americans.

Attendees will taste flights of California and Oregon wines paired with Filipino foods. Featured wines include pairings from Eden Canyon Vineyards, Silver Oak Cellars, Austin Robaire Vintners, and more. Winemaker Elaine Villamin will discuss the different personalities of each wine and the pairings.

WHY
The number of Filipino-owned wineries is increasing. Working for years as farm workers, Filipinos have long been rooted in the wine industry and have now established their own wineries and vineyards. Intended to be fun and informative, Elaine will discuss stories behind the wine and the Filipino-Americans who made them.

MORE WINE
Our 2003 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is ready to release, so we'll be pouring
it alongside our 2002 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon.

Also... My comrade at a neighboring winery, Chumeia Vineyards, will be
pouring with us! As luck would have it, John Stipicevich will be in town and
will treat us to a cornucopia of his wine. Come by and try his pinot noir,
syrah, chardonnay, pinot blanc, and--get this--cabernet sauvignon. See, we
both have San Francisco Chronicle Competition Silver Medal Winners. We want
to know who truly is the winner between us so you get to judge and declare a
winner.

And we want to buy your vote! Place a buck in the glass next to the wine you
like. All the votes go to the Grace Asuncion Scholarship Fund, and we'll
even match them. (OK, one of us might put a little bit more in the kitty to
sway the votes since really, it's all about what you like and not medal
winners.)

Please RSVP so we can ensure enough wine for everyone.

Eden Canyon Vineyards 2002 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon has been selected for the Grammy's gift basket. Too bad we're not the best musicians! We'll stick to wine.

I'll be there (I'm Elaine Villamin) to share vino stories. And if you email me to let me know you're coming, I'll make sure to you're in our freebie drawing.

2003 Vino Filipino!

Wine and Filipino cuisine? Of course! At this event, we will pair wine and highlight the global influences in Filipino cuisine. Come by, have tastes of Filipino cuisine, drink wine from small production vineyards, meet the amazing chefs, and have a great time.

For me, this is a dream come true....My first Filipino food and wine pairing was in New York City with Romy and Amy Dorotan at Cendrillon Restaurant. They changed my perception of Filipino cuisine forever and I am thrilled that they are coming all the way from NYC to treat us. A mailing list member told me about Va de Vi Restaurant in Walnut Creek. I took her advice and went to Va de Vi and was blown away. We're so lucky to have Va de Vi Executive Chef Kelly Degala not only in the East Bay, but also ready to treat us to his art and knowledge.

There are limited seats available, so please RSVP.
