Message in a Bottle There's a story in every bottle of wine...
Summer research... Food pairings Steak and cab are easy pairings, but what about cab and pad thai? Come to our pairing at Red Lantern and tell us what you think. Executive Chef Daniel Sudar will charm us with his cuisine and conversation during an 8-course tasting and I'll bring my barrel samples and a library wine. The final menu will be decided next week, including my favorite lumpia sauce. Taste Southeast Asia Friday, August 1, 2008 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm 8-course food and wine pairing with Exec. Miracle Fruit and Wine Tasting Saturday, August 23, 2008 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Miracle fruit is more than a grape? In June, I went to a reading of "The Fruit Hunters" and tasted miracle fruit. It's hard to describe and something you have to experience- flavors change making sour things taste sweet, lemons like lemonade, and according to a NY Times article, Tabasco sauce tastes like doughnut glaze. It was intriguing so we're going to reproduce the NY Times tasting and pour barrel samples of our future releases. at Periscope Cellars Tasting fee: $12 (credited towards wine purchase)/Free for Eden Canyon Vineyards Wine Club members

"Presente" After visiting Portugal in 2005, I was determined to make our first port-style wine. I ordered the supplies and got geared up. When it was time to fortify our late harvest with brandy, Dad opened up the 167-proof barrel and said "I can't work anymore today. I'm drunk!" The fumes alone did it. He sat on the forklift and laughed. Curious, I drank some of the brandy then numbers started floating on my Excel spreadsheet. I hadn't finished my fortification calculations and had to execute algebraic formulas drunk. It was the first time that Dad and I were hammered together. Happy accidents are gifts, so our first port-style cab is aptly named "Presente" (the Portuguese word for "present" or "gift"). Dad pours a barrel sample of Presente for everyone who visits even though he knows I'm worried that we won't have enough to bottle. But after my nagging, he's stopped pouring seconds. Futures are now available and we're getting ready to bottle... and harvest! See you on a research trip this summer, -Elaine
